Silva

Silva Brand
In the late 1920s one of Silva's founders, Gunnar Tillander, began to think about how compasses could be improved. Gunnar was not only a dedicated counselor, but also a technological innovator and world-class inventor. A few years later, alongside his work as an engineer at LM Ericsson, he developed, over long nights, the first fluid-filled orienteering compass. This considerably shortened the way of adjusting the time with the compass needle, which allowed him to simplify navigation through the forest. He got in touch with Alvar and Björm Kjellström, who were also involved in counseling, and together they founded "Silva". The year was 1933, more than 75 years ago, and since then Silva compasses have been the standard choice for orienteering and outdoor activities.
After its founding, the company developed rapidly and in the mid-1950s, it began its internationalization in earnest. Björn was mainly responsible for development in North America, Albar for other international markets and Gunnar worked on innovative product development and production expansion in Sweden.
The preparation for the transfer of the management of the company to the next generation took place during the 1970s and early 1980s, Gunna's son, Hans-Gunnar Tillander, took over the entire business. With this association, the product portfolio and production were modified, and by the end of 1990 the company included different business areas with different levels of Silva brand recognition.
Silva was acquired in 2006 by Fiskars Corporation, a multinational company founded in 1649 in the small town of Fiskars, Finland, which is now the world's leading manufacturer of scissors and tools for gardening and hardware.
